Beautiful Cookies Aren’t Supposed to Taste Like This

From the Kitchen.
“I’ve never liked that kind of cookie.”
“They’re so pretty to look at, but they’re too hard.”
“I love sugar cookies, but the decorated ones are just too pretty to eat.”
Or, my personal favorite, said from one person to another: “Are you actually going to eat that cookie?”
It’s usually said with a slightly apologetic tone, a look of genuine regret. Not judgment — just experience. Decorated sugar cookies have taught people to be careful with their expectations.
It wasn’t a reaction I expected when I started my business in 2023.
How could someone not like a sugar cookie?
What I started to understand is that decorated cookies carry a reputation. Somewhere along the way, we learned to expect a tradeoff: beauty or taste, but not both.
I don’t hear those comments from my clients, and that difference has shaped how I think about the work.
The magic of a great sugar cookie happens long before the fanfare that gets it noticed.
It starts with soft butter, and the patience of waiting for it to be ready and workable. It's about whole ingredients measured by weight, with a little bit of heart. Knowing just how much vanilla makes up a "splash" or when the sweetness needs a sprinkle of salt.
It's about the cookie itself. The dough.
During the early mornings in the kitchen, before daylight filters in and my coffee has been reheated two or three times, this is what motivates me: watching the look of surprise on my clients’ faces when they take a bite.
Yes, the cookies are beautiful - as they are painstakingly handcrafted to be.
But if they don't carry a soft bite or make you want another, they've missed the mark.
